Whole House Water Filtration System Installation in Irvine: Planning It Into a Repipe

PEX-A multiport tee distributing water lines along joists – Whole House Water Filtration System Installation for Irvine, CA homes

Thinking about a whole house filter and a repipe? Where the system goes in Irvine homes, what it protects, and why installing both together saves work.

A lot of Irvine homeowners start researching whole house water filtration for the same reason they end up calling us about a repipe: white crust on fixtures, spotty glass shower doors, a tankless heater that needs descaling, or a taste they do not love from the tap. Irvine Ranch Water District delivers water that meets drinking standards, but it carries minerals and is disinfected, and many families want to treat it once at the point of entry instead of at every faucet.

If you are already planning to replace the pipes, that is the best time to add the filter.

What a whole house system actually does

A point-of-entry system treats all water entering the home, not just the kitchen tap. Depending on your goals, it may include:

A whole house system is not a substitute for a dedicated drinking-water filter if you want that level of treatment at the kitchen sink. Many households use both.

Why install it during a repipe

On a standalone filter install, the plumber has to cut into the existing main where it enters the house, often in a tight spot, and work around whatever pipe material is already there. In older Woodbridge and Northwood homes, that might be 1970s copper with years of scale.

During a repipe we are already replacing the main distribution line from the house shutoff to every fixture. That means we can:

  1. Pick the right location before the trunk line is set, usually the garage wall or an exterior wall near the main, with room for filter changes and a drain if the system needs one.
  2. Build in a proper bypass loop with isolation valves, so the filter can be serviced or bypassed without affecting the rest of the system.
  3. Size the connections so the filter does not become a pressure bottleneck for a two-story home.
  4. Route hose bibs and irrigation before or after the filter as you prefer. Most people do not need filtered water on the lawn.
  5. Protect the new pipe and the water heater from scale from day one.

The walls are open once, the water is off once, and the inspection covers the whole job.

Fitting it into Irvine homes

Woodbridge and University Park. Many of these homes have the main entering near the garage. We usually mount the system on the garage wall, close to the main shutoff, with the tankless or tank heater downstream.

Northwood and Turtle Rock. Larger two-story layouts and longer runs make sizing more important. A filter that is too small for the home can cut flow to upstairs bathrooms.

Newer villages (Portola Springs, Great Park neighborhoods). These homes may not need a repipe yet, but if one is planned later, setting up a filter loop now with isolation valves makes future work simple.

HOA rules in many Irvine villages affect where outdoor equipment can be mounted, so we flag anything visible from the street before finalizing the location.

Maintenance to expect

Every system needs cartridge or media changes on a schedule that depends on your water use. We install with clear labeling and accessible valves so changes are quick. If the system includes softening, it will need salt and a drain connection.
